2021 overview: reading, blogging and more!

Hello! 2021 has come to an end and it somehow feels like this year was so fast and so slow at the same time? It feels surreal writing this post summing up my year online, talking about what I read, watched and blogged but overall, it was so amazing being online this year since I made so so many amazing friends and probably had the best reading year of my life. So, let’s dive in and take a lot at what I read, some reading stats, some blogging overviews and some of my favourite shows of the year!

READING

chart of books I read per month

My year was kind of a mess of reading depending on my mood. In January, I watched haiku and then proceeded to read all volumes from after where the show ended and so, well, my reading shot up to 30 books that month. In June, I was doing a 30 books in 30 days challenge (which was successful yay!) and that’s the reason for the bump up in reads then! Otherwise, most months I read around 7-12 books which eels like a pretty good average and I really wish I can keep up with it this year too! A big reason for this was most definitely audiobooks which I found and began to love around late 2020 and 2021 has definitely increased my love for them and so has my reading because of them!

Pages per book

pages read:
average pages: 374

Well, since most romances generally fall in the 300-400 page range while fantasy usually is around 400-500 pages, exceeding it when it’s an adult fantasy it makes sense that most books I read are around the 300-500 age range and making my average length of book to be 374 pages.

longest book: Jade Legacy (713 pages)
shortest book: The Lottery (15 pages)

Genre

I am definitely a big fantasy reader so having 34% fantasy is no surprise, actually it feels a little less to be honest. I feel like I read a lot more fantasy than usual, which is technically true since I read more than I usually do but the proportion still remained the same.

I also read a lot of romance to comfort me this year and it’s my second favourite genre but to see it get to 30% is a little crazy to me. I’m also glad I have 30% of other genres since I wanted to expand into different genres and I hope I can keep this up in 2022. I do want to read more non fiction and thrillers since I really enjoyed the thrillers I read this year!

Audience

YA is definitely the age range I read out but I have been shifting away from it this year, especially towards the end, and reading more adult fantasy and romance so it’s no surprise having 34% adult. I think moving forward I will have even more adult books on here as I don’t feel like reading high school setting currently and haven’t been for a while. I really hope I can come back to YA books sooner rather than later but I don’t think it will be this year

Format

Audiobooks have been a life saver and my concentration has been detonating a lot so it’s no surprise to see it dominating the graph at 50%! I also read a lot of arcs as e-books so having a majority fo that is no surprise to me either! I don’t really get to buy many books so seeing very few physical books is no surprise and I often read books I own as audiobooks too so, that’s that. I think moving forward there will be an equal or maybe even increasing number of audiobooks as the format I read thanks to audiobook subscriptions.

Years Published

It makes sense that the majority of books I read were published in 2021 since there were ARCs and all the new releases everyone was talking about which got me to read them! There were also so many 2020 and 2019 books I’d bene meaning to get to and I’m so glad to see I did actually get to so many of them! I even read 2 arcs for 2022 so any for me being a little ahead!

BLOGGING

2021 was definitely my year in blogging. I’ve had an on and off relationship with blogging ever since I started and when I hit 3 years of blogging this year, I was sufficiently surprised seeing as I take so many breaks and hiatuses and had barely been consistent till then but I decided to make it more of a priority since and I am glad to say it’s been working very well for me and I’ve blogged a lot this year and I really love that for me.

I also took so many new steps in blogging such as interviewing authors. I was scared and afraid but now that I have interviewed some of my all time favourite authors: Fonda Lee, Shelley Parker-Chan and Olivie Blake I just feel so proud of myself for taking that step and so happy to have been able to interact with them and have had the confidence to do so. While I have lagged off with the interviews in the past 2 months, I have a lot of authors I would like to interview going forward and I’m excited to start reaching out to authors again!

my favourite posts of the year!

collabs with other bloggers

I had a great time becoming friends with other bloggers this year and I even got to collaborate with them on some posts (all of which turned out so so amazing!) and I couldn’t not highlight all these posts! Also go check them out because they are all so amazing!

blogging achievements: I also hit 1000 followers on my blog this year and it is a milestone I never thought I’d achieve! It feels very surreal to have 1000 people receiving my posts, to know that there are a thousand of you who at some point decided that they want to see what I write, that they care about the books I talk about and review and recommend and may at some time pick them up or at least remember them because I mentioned them.

FAVOURITE TV SHOWS / MOVIES

Haikyuu!

I found this show late 202 and then proceeded to rewatch it multiple times this year, reading the rest of the manga and then reading about a hundred thousand fics about them. It’s become a comfort place for me and it means so so much to me and I love these characters so much.

It makes me so happy to think about this show and see how the characters grow and develop and change and they all have a special place in my heart!

Arcane

Although I know nothing about League of Legends, I decided to watch this show and can I just tell you how amazing it was? I adored the artwork and the music and sound effects and the story and characters. There were some crazy plot twists that had me clutching my chest and I can not wait for season 2 to get more of them!

Hometown Cha Cha Cha

This show so cute and sweet and fun and it made me laugh and cry and just fall in love with the characters and I loved it so so much! It was such a comfort show which made my heart glow with happiness even while it deals with some hard, heavy topics very well.

I also loved the town of Gongjin and how pretty it was and everyone that lived there. The people were so amazing and I loved we got to see the stories of so so many of them!

Avatar The Last Airbender

I’ve been wanting to watch this show for so long and I am so glad I finally got to it this year because I absolutely adored it! It was a fun and engrossing show and I love the magic, the plot and the characters! I couldn’t stop watching it and I even went ahead and watched the Legend of Korra, which was also fun but not as good as avatar the last Airbender in my opinion!

Falling Into Your Smile

Clo introduced me to this show and I couldn’t be more delighted! I loved this show to its very bones and words can not explain how amazing it was. The characters, the plot, the romance, the involvement of the game and the artwork, and juste everything about this show was fabulous.

If you want something fun to see which will make you swoon and really want to date someone, go watch this on YouTube!

Schitt’s Creek

This show truly was something else. While I didn’t really like the first few episodes and thought I wouldn’t love this show, I am so glad I persevered and finished watching the first season because by the end of it I was in love, The characters are absolutely everything to me. They are all so different and kind of crazy in their own way and that’s what is beautiful – seeing them all come together and become friends and be the family they weren’t for each other and rediscovering themselves in this new town.

This show just made me so emotional and I was crying the entirety of the last episode and I often just go back and rewatch for the serotonin this show always gives me.
