Types of Readers

Hello everyone! The ‘types of readers’ discussion had been going on forever and everyone loves to add their own viewpoints so I decided to do a post on it too because I was bored and came up with some fun names and had no better ideas for a blog post, so here I am.

This is the reader that everyone aspires to be. They are good at maintaining a schedule and have a set time to read everyday and actually follow through! They are the ones who rarely ever fall into reading slumps because of their good reading habits. They are also the ones who’re always giving out guides on how to have better schedules.

This is the reader that is done with the book usually 48 hours within them picking it up. They may or may not read it all in one setting, but they do devour the book like a thirsty person who hasn’t had water for days. They can’t seem to be able to stop themselves and unless they have something else very important going on that they need to focus on, they will be done with the book before you know it.

This is the reader who is somehow always in the middle of 5 books, trying to finish all of them at once. You ask them what they’re reading and they’d not be able to remember even one name because they’d all be mixed up in their head. But hats off to these people for keeping all the stories straight in their head and being able to immerse themselves into any of them at a moments notice.

This is the reader that reads slowly and taken in everything properly. They may spend a month on a book but they remember everything perfectly and could talk about it for days on an end. Not to discount them though, they could read a book a day when they want to because they’ll take time out at their own pace. Moreover, they choose which book they pick up very carefully, making sure it is one they would surely enjoy.

This reader keeps buying new books but reads few of the ones they already have. Everyone is probably a little guilty of these but this specific breed takes it to another level. We all have a lot of books that we want to read and buy a lot of them too, but this person has a whole bookshelf of unread books, or maybe some more. Don’t talk to them about their TBRs unless you want a whole rant about it.

This is the reader that is prone to read all the newer books on their TBR and neglect the backlist books. I mean, I totally get it, all those new shiny books that everyone around you seems to be talking about? It’s easy to get seduced. This reader is quite fickle and often leaves their current read to join in in reading the newest books around and keeps promising all the old books on their TBR that they’d go back to them soon.

This is the reader that is always reminiscing about all the books they’ve read and loved and keeps going back to them very frequently. They keep returning to the same old worlds they are in love with to relive all the precious moments that made them fall in love with it in the first place.

This is the reader who has a short memory span and is always forced to reread all the previous books in the series when the newest book comes out. They’re the ones who always try to hold off on reading a series until it is complete, and for good reason since they can’t ever remember what had happened in the previous books!

I don’t think any of us will fit into just one category, but I think I am mostly the Chaotic Reader with the Binge Reader gene coming into play sometimes. You’ll find me lost within 5 books barely keeping the stories straight and often having to turn back a few pages to remind myself what was going on. However, sometimes a book will completely grip me and I will be unable to stop myself from devouring it whole as fast as I possibly can.

Those are the types of readers according to me! Do you agree with my classifications? Is there any classification you would add? What type of reader are you according to the types I listed above? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I’m certainly a cross between the hoarder, the rereader and the forgetful reader. I’m re-reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone now realising I don’t remember much of it at all and I’ve read it a few times before 🤣

  2. I think i’m a mix of rereader, consistent and binge reader. I always have time for reading and can easily finish a book in a day or two. I absolutely love rereading it could be just because I love them so much or I’m not sure what I think about them now after years and years.

  3. i think right now i’m very much the consistent reader. i’ve been able to keep up a reading schedule since 2021 started, which makes me super happy. but at the same time, i wish i could be more like the impulsive reader. like, i will look at certain books on my TBR and be like ugh i really wish i could read this right now, when the only thing actually stopping me is a schedule i created myself? lol. i shouldn’t be so strict about it, but i’m afraid that if i mess up the schedule, i won’t be able to get back to it. oh well, all books will get read eventually!

    1. Wow, that is great! I mean, I do get that and I really admire you since if I feel a pull towards another book I can never resist, even if I’m already in the middle of 5 other books!

    1. Being a consistent reader is such a dream, and so hard to achieve and keep up! Being forgetful is such a pain – I already have so may books on my tar, why can’t my brain even remember the ones I have read?!
