February Wrap Up

hello march, a new month and so many new experiences to come! however, let’s first take a look back at February which despite being the shortest month of the year somehow felt like it went on forever and forever and I somehow still managed to do a grand total of nothing at all.

ABSOLUTELY ADORE

How Moon Fuentez Fell In Love With the Universe by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland

God, trying to talk about this book is so hard sometimes because it just affected me so so much and at the same time, it is s easy because I have so many great things to say about it! It has amazing characters, beautiful writing, an emotional story and a lot of character growth and development and change. I just can not recommend this book enough. Please, please, give it a try.

Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee

I decided to reread this on a whim and I’m not sure if it was the best or worst decision of my life. On one hand, I noticed so much more and could enjoy it so much more and felt so much safer as I knew what would happen. On the other though, it hurt me all over again and I saw so much more which affected me even more and it refreshed all my memories of the Kauls and is making me miss them and wanting to reread the whole series (which will definitely make me not okay). So, take from that what you will.

THOROUGHLY ENJOYED

White tears/ Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Colour by Ruby Hamad

This book was so informational and enlightening and allowed me to learn so much and rethink a lot of my views. I really believe this should be required reading because it’s important and it’ll help children learn and be better and do better and help prevent a lot of the things that the books talk about which may be second nature to people by making them more aware of it. It also helped think more about what it really means to be a feminist and how it needs to be intersectional and how white women ned to learn and rethink their actions and how white fragility seems to reinforce white supremacy in small but important ways.

PRETTY GOOD

Fifteen Hundred Miles From The Sun by Jonny Garza Villa

This book tells a really sweet and hopeful story of a gay boy in Texas who accidentally comes out one night when he’s drunk and then proceeds to become close friends (and eventually boyfriends) with a guy on twitter who’s 15 hundred miles away. While I loved the story itself, I didn;t really vibe with the author’s writing style and storytelling which is more of a me issue so I really recommend this book to you all unless our reading tastes are absurdly similar then, well, I’m not sure how much you may enjoy it. But if you generally love YA contemporaries, this is a great one!

Written In The Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur

This was a cute, fun and fast adult romance featuring two girls – one who was looking for a soulmate and one who doesn’t want to date anyone who end up fake dating due to help the second girl stop her brother from setting her up on more blind dates. It’s really cute with grumpy x sunshine, fake dating and opposites attract. I also loved both the characters and the romance and overall, it was just a very enjoyable book!

Hang The Moon by Alexandria Bellefleur

The sequel to Written In the Stars which features the brother, Brendon and his sister’s best friend, Annie whom he’s always had a crush on! I think I liked this one slightly less than the first book because of the short two weeks it takes place over which felt a little too fast to me but other than that this was also just as sweet and fun as the first book!

Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur

The final book in the series which features Elle’s roommate, Margot and her childhood best friend (and lover?) who reunite after so many years apart and end up sharing an apartment. With the large amount of time spent together, the sexual tension and unresolved emotions overall it made for a wonderful book which totally had my heart! The only thing I didn’t like so much was the miscommunication between the two but well, it all did get resolved well so?

Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan

This sequel had me amazed and wanting more at the same time. I loved how it deals with the aftermath of book 1 not neglecting all the trauma that was a result of it and how it deeply affected the characters of the book. However, I feel like this book did suffer from the second book syndrome, lagging and feeling aimless at times and just not living up to everything I wanted after how much I enjoyed book 1. I’m hoping that book 3 will be better though and an apt conclusion to this series!

Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe

This was quite an enlightening book focusing on the opioid crisis in America going through three generations of the Sacklers – the family who is one of the largest reasons that caused things to reach where they were. There was a lot to uncover and go through in this book and I liked how the author explained everything in quite some detail and kept things simple enough for the reader to follow. A lot of it felt very unrealistic and at the same time so easily possible and I highly recommend this book if you want to learn more about the opioid crisis or just read non fiction in general.

IT WAS OKAY?

Twisted Hate by Ana Huang

Honestly, I was very very disappointed by this book. I went in expecting a fun, maybe a little toxic romance and great smut and to be honest, I don’t think I really got either of them. I didn’t end up liking or caring about the characters and I found them annoying together mostly and that the drama was so unnecessary. I will admit I did think a few scenes were pretty sweet and a few were hot but overall, they didn’t do much to redeem the book for me.

WHAT I WATCHED

Encanto

I finally watched this movie and yes, it lived up to all my expectations and I absolutely adored it! The movie was just so beautifully made and the characters were amazing as well and I loved the magic and the songs and just everything. You know when it’s hard to talk about something because you have so much to say but also can’t put it into words? This is kind of like that! Plus so many people have already said so many amazing things about this movie so just believe it and go watch it if you haven’t!

Falling Into Your Smile

I watched this how around August last year because of Clo and absolutely fell in love with it, the plot, the characters and just everything! I’m now rewatching it with Clo and Ruby and just trying to go slow and enjoy everything even more in the rewatch and squeal about the awesome scenes and characters and the gaming! I’m also planning on taking some notes and making a whole post on the show once we are done with the reach so stay tuned on more about this show and hopefully I can convince you to watch it too!

Marvel’s What If

My brother told me to watch this after the Dr Strange 2 trailer dropped since there were a few references to it and it’ll probably be mentioned even more in the movie and I actually quite enjoyed it and how it questions the events that happened and the consequences they have in broad ways. I also wish a lot of these things had actually happened and that we could have more on it because the questions and new worlds they introduce are fascinating and I’d love to explore them more and think of what Marvel could’ve been if they’d just chosen something else.

WHAT I DID IN FEBRUARY

To be honest February was so slow because I really did nothing at all? I had one midterm just at the end of the month and I took some time to study for it but other than that it was just another month for me. I did get to know that we’d be moving onto Campus in March and omg I am so excited for that since I haven’t been to campus yet and I am hoping it will be a lot of fun! I did spend some time making lists and starting some basic packing so that’s that.

Oh, it’s also my grandparent’s 50th anniversary in March so I helped with some preparations like invite lists, looking at the places they’ll be holding the part (I was just there for aesthetic and food tasting I don’t know about fitting in the people okay) and I also went shopping for some clothes for the party (and didn’t really find anything 😦 I desperately need to find something soon) and yeah I’m really excited for it!
